An Australian penal colony in 1789. A young lieutenant directs rehearsals of the Restoration comedy, The Recruiting Officer. With a cast of convicts, opposition from sadistic officers and a leading lady who is due to hang, Australia's first theatrical production is in trouble from the start.

Management Teaching use: If we look at this text from a human resource management perspective, it is a case study in enlightened management attempting to change old habits through an innovative programme. The distrust of the staff and the other members of the management team is made clear. However, it is also evident that it has a beneficial effect. The class could discuss other ways of introducing new motivational techniques and the paradox that such moves are not always well regarded by their employees.
