Fired from his newspaper and disgusted with a world that undervalues him, Ted Wallace seeks a few months repose and free drink at the country mansion of his old friend, Lord Logan. But strange things have been going on at Swafford Hall, phenomena beyond the comprehension of a hippopotamus like Ted.

Management Teaching use: This text is interesting in two ways. It first of all contains two particularly well-constructed case studies of two generations of businessmen who have, by good timing and luck, managed to create large organisations from very small beginnings. These in themselves would provide a good basis for a class discussion on entrepreneurship and whether it can be taught, or indeed whether it can be inherited. The other aspect of this novel is the way the central character reports the activities, which he is investigating, and how other protagonists report these activities. The text therefore provides a good example of the way different members of an organisation or team may interpret or understand what happens around them. As such it would be useful for a discussion on complexity and the difficulty of gaining a 'true' picture of the organisation unless it is given from a variety of perspectives.
