Blooming Books

A fascinating look at the work of one of our most significant and bestloved author/illustrators. Beginning with his first published illustration in 1958 and continuing through to the work he continues to produce today, Blooming Books is a stunning and diverse exploration of the work of this unique and brilliant artist. Commentaries by the journalist Nicolette Jones accompany extracts and, in some cases, complete picture books, reviewing the background to Briggs's work and its underlying themes. Following a foreword from Raymond Briggs and Nicolette Jones's introduction, the book is divided into four main sections: The Early Years (including, among many others, The Elephant and the Bad Baby); The Nursery Classics (e.g. Father Christmas, The Snowman, The Bear); A Gallery of Characters (e.g. Fungus, The Man, Ug) and The Social Issues (When the Wind Blows, The Tin-Pot Foreign General and the Old Iron Woman, Ethel and Ernest). All of Briggs's work is here, from his captivating work for children through to the sharp and satirical works found in The Social Issues. Familiar favourites are also accompanied by some previously unseen material.

Ivor the Invisible

Ivor is the latest story from popular children's author and illustrator, Raymond Briggs. Ivor is the story of an invisible giant who comes to live with John and his family. The giant is mischevious and teases John, refusing to tell him its name or let him measure it to find out how big it is. Sometimes the giant is helpful, but often it becomes childish and naughty and in the end life becomes impossible for John and he asks it to leave. This is when the giant reveals its secret.... Ivor has all the charm of Raymond Briggs' previous books, but for the first time the animation precedes the book. The half-hour film will be shown over the Christmas period and will be in a jewel in Channel 4's Christmas crown. It has all the elements that children expect of Briggs, strong characters, beautiful illustration, and above all, an element of subversity.

The Puddleman

Tom refers to his grandfather as 'Collar' because he drags him around on a lead. One day, Tom decides that he will take Collar on a walk to see the puddles he has named after the members of the family, but the puddles are not there. Collar insists that this is because it hasn't rained, but Tom believes that it's just because they haven't been put in yet. He wanders off, leaving Collar talking to Mrs Whitebobblehat, and comes across just the person he needs... Finally, puddles restored to their full, family-resembling glory, Tom and Collar go home for tea.

Tin Pot Foreign General and the Old Iron Woman

Briggs turns political in this vicious nursery rhyme vision of the Falklands War. He fearlessly attacks the crazy mechanisms of government which pitched two iconic figures into war over the sovereignty of an isolated, irrelevant territory and killed an awful number of innocent soldiers in the process...
