When Dorothy and Toto are suddenly swept off the plains of Kansas by a huge cyclone to the land of Oz, they meet up with the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman and the Cowardly Lion, and together they set off down the yellow brick road in search of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Cat's best friend is the canary in his apartment. Once their master has gone out, Cat lets Canary out of his cage, and they go up onto the roof together. Cat wishes he could fly, like all the birds around him, and when he finds a kite tangled in an aerial, it's too much of a temptation. But the kite carries him much too high, and much too far, and Canary needs to martial a crowd of feathered friends to tow the kite home. Cat isn't the least bit bothered: 'Tomorrow, we can go to the land beyond the river, and still be back for tea!'

Summer in St. Ives is a good time for the stray cat. Visitors give him titbits to eat, and it is warm on his hill. Then, in autumn the tourists start to leave, and food is more difficult to come by. But winter is worse: it is a cold, lonely time - full of danger and constant hunger. Appetizing smells from the village drift up the hill, enticing him to risk the notice of the fierce village cats. And come Christmas, who will remember the cat on the hill? Fans of Saving Sinbad, also set in St. Ives, will recognise some of the characters in this moving and beautifully illustrated tale. It will surely join Michael Foreman's Cat in the Manger as a family favourite throughout the year - and especially, perhaps, at Christmas.

A boy's world is ruin and rubble, with a wire fence and soldiers separating him from the cool hills where his father used to take him as a small child. Can a tiny, green plant shoot give him hope in a bleak landscape?

One day, when man had set out for a distant star, the dinosaurs came back to life and tidied up the barren wastes he had left behind him. Man was only allowed back when he agreed that the earth should be shared and enjoyed by everyone.

While a boy sleeps, a pencil writes its story on a piece of paper - how it lived in a box of other pencils in a shop, and how, before that, it was part of a tall tree. The paper, the table, the door and the window all tell their tales until the boy is suddenly woken.

First published in 1998, this story for 4-7 year-olds is based on a true family story. Jack's favourite place is his grandfather's shed, an upside-down boat on the beach. There he learns about boats and sailing. Grandfather helps him build a raft to sail in the big race. It might be the smallest vessel, but with helping hands Jack is the winner.

Little Red Hen finds some grains of wheat and decides to plant them, but none of her friends will help. She harvests the wheat, and carries it to the miller all on her own. It is then baked into a beautiful loaf of bread, which suddenly makes all her friends think they ought to have a piece too.

Michael Foreman looks back on his own childhood both during and after the war on the Suffolk coast of England, where wartime life was far from quiet and uneventful, and where post-war life was full of potential adventures for small boys.
