Meinir Pierce Jones
Y Gongol Felys (Edith's Voyage)
14-year-old Edith longs for the adventure and mystery she finds in novels, but when she experiences them in the cold springtime of 1912 she will regret the sudden end of childhood stability. When her widowed sea-captain father resumes his long voyages around the Horn and announces that his sister-in-law, Netta, will take charge in his absense, his sister Gwen, who had brought up the motherless children, abruptly walks out. Through Edith's eyes we see the inevitable unravelling of a family trying to conceal the shameful circumstances of a deep rift some 20 years earlier. The gradual unravelling of Edith's familiar world marks not only the end of childhood certainties and innocence but forms a prologue to the wider social upheavals that will come to this part of rural north-west Wales with the First World War, already under way by the time her story is finished.
