In 1967 Penguin Books published the work of Brian Patten, along with that of Roger McGough and Adrian Henri in the collection The Mersey Sound, subsequently credited as the single most significant anthology of the 20th century in bringing poetry to new audiences. The anthology continues to sell and Brian Patten's reputation as a poet, as a performer, and as a very popular children's writer has grown. In this first full-length critical evaluation of Patten's work Linda Cookson explores the ways in which the themes and preoccupations of earlier works have sharpened and developed into the accomplished and acclaimed collection Armada which signals Patten's arrival as a poet of mature quality.
