Teenage Reading Club, Abuja

Themes:

Africa@12 and TBooks lists.

Participants:Teenagers

The first meeting was held in October 2004 with about 20 students of about ages 13 - 17. Meetings are once a month on Saturdays for 2 hours with a round up with some drinks and sandwiches. It started with four titles, two schools with two titles, and the other two schools with two titles, so at the next  meeting there were four books to discuss.

They started with the Africa@21 collection, but will be incorporating the teenage fiction collection (TBooks) as well.

After each meeting the best review of the book we are reading will be selected and posted onto the discussion board on encompassculture. A section of the Africa@21 webboard is available for the group.

Web chats with other teenage readers and authors will be arranged.

April 2005

The group has now read the following Africa@21 books:

My once upon a time by Diran Adebayo

Garbage King by  Elizabeth Laird

Refugee Boy by Benjamin Zephaniah

By the sea by Abdulrazak Gurnah

Their two favourite books were:

Garbage King by  Elizabeth Laird

The garbage king is a compelling story based on fate and friendship. It gives one first and foremost an insight into a culture and country that is so like ours, which makes it so easy to relate to every page in the book. The story is well written and we had to keep turning the pages in great anticipation of what laid in store especially for Dani who had a choice of a better life.

Fate brought the two boys from different backgrounds together and friendship kept them together. The most important aspect of the book is that no teenager after reading this book would consider running away from home, because as much we sometimes try to be rebellious, Life (no matter how difficult it may be) in the comfort of our parent’s homes is till a lot better than being on the streets It’s a wonderful story and a book we can recommend for any teenager.

Refugee Boy by Benjamin Zephaniah

It’s a thought provoking book, makes one able to visualise the world of a refugee. Refugee has always been a word we hear on TV of people living their country and moving to other people’s land and so on. But the Refugee boy puts a face on every refugee we have heard about.  As much as the book portrays war and death, the story of Alem’s life also brings a message of hope, peace and courage.

We found the book really interesting and knowledgeable, especially for us teenagers. We recommend this book.
