Teenage Kicks

Participants:Teenagers in secondary schools in Tirana; English language teachers; Publishers

 

Reaching beyond the capital through electronic means (online chat, creative writing and an online creative writing quilt). This project will involve author visits and film screenings as well as Reading Groups. It aims to promote British Literature to young people, English teachers, librarians and local publishers, creating links with the UK and Albania.

Teenage Kicks

Teenage Kicks starts with a two-day event where participants will be involved with debates, readings, creative writing sessions and a DJ Party. This project aims to promote UK teenage literature and raise awareness of diverse reading cultures by engaging teenagers in discussion. Reading Groups will then be set up.

The idea has been presented to the Literary Conferences at Brasov and Timisoara Universities with interest from Faculties of English around Romania.  Each Faculty will choose a book from the enCompassCulture website and the British Council in Romania will supply a number of copies. The University Reading group will keep the books for two months and then pass them on to the next University on the list.

Reading Groups are being set up in 10 Bucharest secondary schools to develop students' interest in reading contemporary UK literature. These groups will be integrated into the school timetable and take place seven times over a year facilitated by a teacher and a student. In each session the student will decide on a response to the liteary text. Follow-up activities for the students will include video conferences with students and authors, literary parties, the creation of bilingual postcards to promote contemporary literature, and translation competitions. Information will also be available on the Romanian Teacher's Assocaition website.
