ELT E-READING GROUP

The ELT e-Reading Group was created by a collective of English language teachers from all over the world with the support of the British Council Arts and ELT Departments.

Our Objectives

  • To encourage English language teachers and those studying English Literature as part of their Higher Education to read literature in English, creating opportunities to get in contact with texts from different countries, periods and authors
  • To promote debate and an in-depth engagement with relevant issues through the discussion of works of literature in English
  • To provide opportunities for teachers to talk to each other online underpinning the reading habit and building an ELT community of readers. This opportunity of networking facilitating acknowledgement of otherness and sensitisation towards diversity of cultures can finally lead to the formation of a group of better-equipped resource teachers in their own teaching environments. This networking may eventually provide teachers with a 'cue to pedagogic inventions' (Rocklin, 1995) in their respective contexts
  • To help English language educators to see other points of view connecting them to a wider world, other philosophies and new ideas building bridges between, and insight into, other cultures thus contributing to building tolerance and intercultural competence
  • To create opportunities for English Language teachers to develop their own language skills, increasing vocabulary, improving pronunciation and increasing their understanding of idiom and expressions as well as their command of the language as a whole.

How it works

The ELT e-Reading Group is open to all ELT professionals and students of literature who want to join it. All our texts come from free online resources and participants are invited to post their comments to the group¡¦s discussion board. There are three major threads in the group:

  • Short Stories: a space to discuss and comment on our monthly short stories
  • Novel Choice: discussion on novels selected by our members
  • Poets Corner: the space for posting and commenting on our favourite poems.
