FIVE WAYS TO SEARCH AND BROWSE

 *

You can make your own booklist, check out our bibliographies and ready-made booklists, browse in the author index, use the quick search box, or take recommendations from other readers and the Online Reader in Residence.

1. Make your own booklist
  • First select the age-group you are looking for by clicking on: Books for Adults; Books for Ages 12–18; or Books for Children
  • Next, click on the arrow next to the category that most appeals to you, for example, Crime fiction or Pot Luck – this will take you to the Reading Compass of your choice
  • Now to get your booklist just select a category by clicking on the arrow next to it and then click Go
  • If you want to you can combine two categories by clicking on both before clicking Go this will give you a list of the two combined followed by books in both categories
  • You can also click on the option at the side of the screen – 'Prize winners'. On the children's Reading Compasses you can also select 'Reading Age' and 'Interest Level' by typing in the ages, eg., putting in 6 and 8 in the Reading Age boxes would retrieve books for ages 6 to 8

2. Check out our bibliographies and ready-made booklists

We have a number of bibliographies and booklists available on the site, for example, TBooks (teenage books) or Amazing Colours (new fiction 2001–3). Some of these have related notes on their selection or how to use them with reading groups which you can find in the Reading Group section or by using the Search Box (top right-hand side of the site) to search the site

  • Click on the Booklist button on the right of the top menu bar
  • Select the booklist that interests you

3. Look in the author index
  • Click on Author index on the far right of the top menu bar to broswe through the A–Z author index
  • Click on the name of the author whose books you want to read and it will give you a list of all their books on the site

4. Use the Quick Search box

To find books

  • Click in the search box at the top right-hand side
  • Type in the name of the author, the book title or any keyword from the title of the book
  • Select Books
  • Click on Go

To search the other areas of the site such as the Reading Group section or the Online Reader in Residence newsletters, monthly book reviews and interviews.

  • Click in the search box at the top right-hand side
  • Type in a word or author's name – it is best not to type in long sentences as it will only find the exact words you put into the search box
  • Select Rest of Site
  • Click on Go

5. Recommendations

Take a recommendation from other site users (reviews, discussion boards) or the Online Reader in Residence.

That's it! We hope you enjoy reading our recommendations. If you don't find any results, try limiting your choices to only one or two categories, or just select 'Prize winners'.

Once you have your booklist you can print or download it by selecting Download to rtf/Word at the bottom of the page.

To try another search, click the 'Search again' button.
